To combat the problems of inappropriate used cooking oil (UCO) disposal and lack of liquid waste recycling in Singapore, Project GREASE has conceptualized a three-tier approach:
1) Spread knowledge of the oil-to-soap method.
We regularly conduct workshops teaching participants – which comprise both interested members of the public and people from specific organizations – how to make recycling personal and satisfying by turning it into soap based on an adapted recipe.
2) Encourage households to contribute their UCO for recycling.
Recently, we implemented GREASE-ycle, a six-month pilot oil collection programme in collaboration with Northwest Community Development Council. This initiative will see us collecting UCO from households in the Chong Pang area every fortnight. The UCO will eventually be turned into soap with the help of Green Clubs in the North West area.
3) Educate the public on the proper method of UCO disposal.
Project GREASE participates in environmental outreach programmes or events, during which we take the opportunity to educate others on the proper method of UCO disposal. This is so that even if they are unwilling or unable to play a part in recycling UCO, inappropriate disposal of UCO will at least be prevented.
